Poitiers is the main location of the University of Poitiers with 22,000 students studying either in the city center or on campus. The city thus has the highest proportion of students (in relation to the total population) of all university cities, making it one of the most “studenty” cities in France!
The city center
The University of Poitiers benefits from the city’s rich history and heritage. It has private mansions from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (Aubaret, Berthelot, Chaboureau, Fumé) where courses are still held today. The Presidency of the University of Poitiers is also located in the city center in the Hôtel Pinet. A stone’s throw from the media library and the city’s busy streets, students enjoy a privileged living environment in the city center of Poitiers.

Poitiers, a city where it is good to be a student
Every year, the magazine l’Etudiant publishes its annual list of cities where it is good to study. Poitiers ranks 2nd in its category (large cities). It is one of the few cities of this size to compete with the main cities. In the overall ranking, Poitiers is in 12th place.
Among the criteria selected by L’Étudiant Magazine, training, student life and the living environment are the main strengths of Poitiers. Based on these criteria alone, it moved up to 5th place in the ranking for all cities combined, ahead of Toulouse, Lyon, Strasbourg and Bordeaux.
Among the strengths of Poitiers, should be noted:
The possibility to access all degree coursesThe University of Poitiers is multidisciplinary, which is not the case for all universities. As a student in Poitiers, you can carry out all your study projects (Medicine, Law, Economics, Psychology, Sciences…).
The very favorable cost of living for students in Poitiers, with an average cost of student accommodation which is among the lowest in France (320 € per month)
A bustling campus With a student center that federates initiatives and projects, support for community involvement, cultural and festive events, a campus radio station, sports activities, services dedicated to health and social assistance: everything is done to welcome students in the best conditions, support their projects and develop their civic spirit.
Many cultural events are offered to students throughout the academic year. From the beginning of the academic year, a rich and varied welcome month is organized for new students (on the program: concerts, theatre, community forum, zip line trips, etc.).
Poitiers, a city of art and history
Poitiers is located in an enviable geographical environment, 90 minutes from the sea, easy to access, the city is located halfway along the Paris-Bordeaux axis. A land of travel, meeting places and fusion, Poitiers plays an importantrole on the international scene.
Rightly known as the “city of 100 spires”, Poitiers offers spectacular monuments and Romanesque churches but also picturesque medieval streets or half-timbered houses creating a guaranteed medieval atmosphere!
Poitiers also boasts a dynamic and eclectic cultural life, evidenced by a Theatre & Auditorium of national fame, located in the heart of the city, which completes the many activities scheduled all year round (theatre, concerts, dance shows, contemporary circus…). Various national and international events are also organized each year, including the Henri Langlois cinema festival, the street festival of expressive music and many others!
Another defining feature of Poitiers is the abundance of parks and gardens, which are a breath of fresh air where the inhabitants like to go and recharge their batteries, to walk, to enjoy the landscape with a book in hand or, for the bravest, admire it by doing a short morning jog. Often considered as “the smallest of the big cities”, Poitiers offers all the services of a big city while maintaining a very good quality of life.
Where to eat
In the center of Poitiers, the CROUS has two restaurants: the RU Roche d’Argent and the 1873. A food truck (Crous Truck) is also available at the University Presidency near the University Music and Dance Hall.
On campus, you have four restaurants at your disposal as well as cafeterias in several university colleges or departments (Medicine, Law and Social Sciences, Literature and Languages, Students’ House…).
If you need information, if you can’t find a place, if you want information about campuses and student life, feel free to visit the Student House on campus, you will be welcomed from Monday to Thursday from 9am to 9pm and on Friday until 5pm.
