There are 30 académies in France.

If you live in the Vienne region, your child’s school is in the Poitiers academy.

In France, schooling is compulsory from age 3 to 16. Education is mainly provided by :

  • free public schools, with the exception of canteen fees, before- and after-school care and extra-curricular activities. Your child will be assigned to a school according to where you live.
  • private schools under contract with the State, which set their own fees. Your child can be enrolled in any private school, regardless of where you live.

Programs are the same in all establishments.

The school year begins in September. The school vacation schedule depends on the zone in which the school is located. The main summer vacations, which are the same for all zones, are in July and August.

The Poitiers academy is part of zone A for school vacations.

To find out the calendar for the current school year, visit the Education Nationale website.

    • previous school documents, if possible
