The University of Poitiers, a responsible actor in its region, is committed itself on concrete and achievable actions in terms of sustainable development. At its levels of responsibility, it is developing alternative solutions to longstanding inequalities, the depletion of resources, the unequal redistribution of wealth production and inconsiderate consumption of fossil fuels.
The university also supports students and staff on a daily basis in order to help them adopt the right habits and behavior, both individually and collectively, in the general interest.
‘DDRS’ (SDSR) labeling
As early as 2016, the University of Poitiers was one of the first two French universities to be awarded the ‘DDRS’ label (Sustainable Development and Social Responsibility). The DDRS label not only rewards considerable achievements in Poitiers, but also attests to the sincerity of an approach that is part of a continuous improvement process. The university takes legitimate pride in this for the staff and students who are the real architects of this success story.
Since obtaining the DDRS label, the University of Poitiers has produced its sustainable development master plan (S3D) to implement its commitment to the ecological and energy transition: the main priorities of S3D are energy performance, green and blue frames, landscape and biodiversity, mobility and waste.
Commitments and action
The DDRS label at the University of Poitiers is organized around 5 priorities:
- Governance: sustainable development vice-presidency, DDRS strategy debated and voted by the Board of Directors, sustainable development made a priority goal of the Foundation, DDRS emphasis in course catalogues, DDRS criteria in procurement contracts, diversity charter, gender equality charter, community grocery store, improvement of the reception of international students…
- Training: BAs/BScs, DUTs (2-year vocational diplomas), Masters Degrees, Engineering diplomas… 25 courses related to sustainable development, 1 pole dedicated to the environment, the creation of open teaching units (EU) to encourage commitment, the development of many tutor-supervised projects….
- Research: dozens of inter- and trans-disciplinary projects integrating sustainable development, particularly within shared research themes: environment, ecology and biodiversity; autonomy, health, sports; energy efficiency and transport…
- Environmental management: implementation of eco-campuses, 100% eco-labelled cleaning products, 100% sustainably maintained green spaces and roads, 50% of the car fleet to be electric, over 10% insertion in major real estate projects, improvement of quality of life: 35,000 m² already renovated, 30,000 m² in progress…
- Local anchoring: involvement in local higher education and research schemes, creation of an urban heating network and a biomass boiler room on campus, support for the environmental film festival, development of motor-free mobility, etc.
Developing eco-campuses
With biodiversity on campuses, reduction of energy consumption, development of motor-free mobility, “zero waste” strategy, the University of Poitiers is radically transforming university sites to create a new living environment conducive to the development of campus life.
